Shalaine Stebner, considers herself a Pretty Country genre Music Artist. She has developed her own style that has brought her some great feedback and encouragement.
This Country Music Singer Songwriter is from Ponoka, Alberta, which is home to a population of 7,331 (2021 – Stats Can) and sits between Calgary and Edmonton in western Canada. Over 80% of their demographic is over the age of 80. Ponoka is home to the Ponoka Stampede, a seven day event that is part of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s professional tour and the World Professional Chuckwagon Association. It is known as being “the place” for Emerging Artists like Shalaine Stebner to grow and to build their fanbase.
Shalaine’s musical roots come from her paternal side. Both her parents and grandparents were more than supportive. She even states that they are her biggest “Cheerleaders”. Shalaine who grew up hanging around her father’s band, where he played drums, marked a great influence in her being the musician and singer songwriter she is today. She even recounts that her father, now retired, joined the stage with her and her band for a while.
The best part for me, musically, growing up…there was never a time when my parents didn’t support me. Buying cd’s, driving me all across Alberta, anything and everything I wanted to do musically, it was always “yes, how can we help?”.
One of the best memories for me in music, when I started getting gigs that required bands, I asked my dad to be my drummer. He, of course, said yes! This was SO special and created such unique memories for us! He has since retired from playing, but will still come out to smaller gigs and play every once in a while! My parents are truly my biggest cheerleaders!
Her father, who used to practice in their basement, intrigued the young Shalaine and her biggest thrill as a child was when one of the band members asked her if she would like to sing. Of course, she jumped at the chance to perform with them.
There was never a time where music wasn’t fully in my heart! My dad was always playing drums in a band, and because we had the biggest basement, that was where they practised! We always went to their shows, and usually would fall asleep under the tables or in the coat room! One time when I was maybe 8 or 9, one of the lead singers asked me if I wanted to sing with them, and I of course said yes! That was the first time I got to experience the stage, and it was addicting!
Shalaine, who later in her teens, was influenced by the Karaoke scene until it “wasnt’ that cool” to perform with a back track anymore, took a brief break from the music scene to reassess her desire to continue in the industry. Then, she discovered her grandfather’s old guitar. A new life was born.
When I was in my teens, I got a karaoke machine and a bunch of cd’s, and that’s how I performed for years, until it was no longer acceptable to not play live. I took a hiatus from performing, until I taught myself how to play guitar on my grandpa’s old guitar!
Shalaine who released Dirt Road Raised last november takes on a new dimension with her new single ‘One Dive Bar”. Dirt Road Raised has a more nostalgic theme of growing up in a small town, where as One Dive Bar talks more about those inner feelings of being transported into a spatial place where you are connected to someone and you just can’t shake that you want to spend more time with them even though you hear the whisper in the other ear stating that “he’s just not good enough for you. Let it go! Walk away.”
One Dive Bar is a take on the idea of being irresistibly attracted to someone, even though you know that you shouldn’t, and only when you go to one specific dive bar. It’s the peeling paint, it’s the musty smell, it’s the crappy karaoke, all leading to that one person that keeps you coming back for more!
